Equality, diversity and inclusion
The department is committed to creating a welcoming, respectful and inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.
We believe that excellence in research, teaching and innovation is strengthened by a diversity of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. We are committed to fostering a culture where staff and students feel valued, supported and able to contribute fully to departmental life.
Our work is guided by the University’s commitment to equality of opportunity and an inclusive community for all.
Our approach
Equality, diversity and inclusion are embedded across the Department’s activities, from recruitment and career development to teaching, research culture and student experience.
We continually review our policies, practices and working environment to identify opportunities for improvement and to help ensure that everyone has access to the support they need to succeed.
Our EDI activities are informed by feedback from staff and students, data analysis, and ongoing engagement across the department.
Athena Swan
Athena Swan is a framework developed by Advance HE that supports universities and research institutions in addressing barriers to progression, improving representation and creating positive working and learning environments for all. It focuses on gender equality while recognising that experiences are shaped by a range of intersecting factors.
The Department holds an Athena Swan Bronze Award in recognition of its commitment to advancing gender equality and creating an inclusive culture.
Our Athena Swan work helps us to:
- promote an inclusive and supportive culture
- support career development and progression
- improve recruitment and retention
- identify and address barriers to participation
- ensure equality considerations are embedded in departmental decision-making
Athena Swan forms an important part of our wider commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Support and wellbeing
We are committed to providing a supportive environment for all members of our community.
Staff and students can access a range of University services covering wellbeing, mental health, harassment and discrimination support, accessibility, and equality-related guidance.
