Research fellowships
Research fellowships are a core part of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology’s research culture. They support talented researchers at different career stages to pursue independent ideas, develop new collaborations and contribute to the department’s strengths across chemical engineering, biotechnology and interdisciplinary science.
The department has a strong track record of securing competitive fellowship funding from major national and international funders, reflecting the quality, ambition and breadth of its research.
CEB is committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse research environment.
We particularly encourage and welcome applications from those who are under-represented in our field and within academic roles at Cambridge – including, but not limited to, women and individuals from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.
Fellowship pathways
Fellowships at CEB are typically grouped into two categories:
- Independent fellowships
- Junior fellowships
Independent
For researchers establishing an independent research programme, as Principal Investigators
Junior
For early-career researchers hosted by a CEB Principal Investigator
Research environment at CEB
Fellows at CEB are part of a collaborative and intellectually active research community. In the Deparment, you will have many opportunities for close interaction with CEB academic staff, postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students.
The department encourages open exchange across disciplines, with opportunities to connect through shared facilities, seminars and informal research activity. Regular gatherings, including departmental tea time, provide space for discussion, idea-sharing and collaboration across groups.
This environment is designed to support both independence and connection, enabling fellows to develop their research while contributing to a wider culture of collaborative science.
